MUSICAL AUTUMN FINALE AT THE STANGLWIRT
This event is unique in the Alpine region: The traditional singers’ get-together in the year 1949 in the Stanglwirt. On 12 November 2011, more than 100 true folk musicians met for the 124th time, to play music under the banner of genuine tradition and shared joy of music.
Original folk music, plain and simply genuine – or in neo-German: authentic. At the traditional singers’ get-together in the Stanglwirt, genuine folk music has been celebrated since over 60 years. Locals and hotel guests alike who were listening to the voices, accordion-tunes, citterns, dulcimers, wind section, harps and many an antique instrument together, were impressed. Among the guests this time was actor Fritz Wepper ("Derrick"), who came with his girlfriend Susanne Kellermann: "This is not just incredibly beautiful and infinitely melodic. You just can't imagine it without experiencing it live. It's got absolutely nothing to do with the Oompah folk music you know from television. I really must recommend it to everyone!"
Since 1949, the best musicians and singers from the Alpine region have been making pilgrimage twice a year to Going am Wilden Kaiser, to play music in the 400-year-old Stangl inn, and let locals as well as house guests share in. At the 124th edition on 12 November, there was once again singing, dancing and playing until late at night. The finale was provided by the traditional performance of the Stanglwirt family, followed by the legendary Stanglwirt lads, consisting of Georg Anker, Toni Pirchl and Balthasar Hauser. "The singers' get-together is something that's very close to my heart and the single most important event here at the Stanglwirt", explained Balthasar Hauser and wasted no time announcing the dates for next year's great anniversary: "For the 125th singers' get-together in the Stanglwirt on 10 November 2012, we'd like to extend a cordial invitation."
Over time, the singers' get-together has established itself as one of the most important dates on the calendar for traditional folk music fans: Old melodies are exchanged, cross-country friendships cultivated and the joy of genuine music celebrated. Merry or contemplative, loud or quiet, but always authentic – many a melody can only be heard in the Stanglwirt these days.
