The "Energy Globe Award for Sustainability" is considered the most significant and prestigious environmental award. On Wednesday, 9/11/2011, the Tyrolean decision was made: The Energy Globe Award Tirol 2011 this year goes to the Kitzbühel E-Bike-Summer. Together with the Kaisergebirge mountain range, the Kitzbühel Alps have banded together to form the largest E-bike region worldwide. Those who would like can now even embark on multi-day tours with the electric bike, thanks to the new battery charging and replacement station in the Tyrolean lowlands.
"The E-Bike-Summer is the best example of the swing towards renewable energy and ecotourism being not only sensible, but that it can also be attractive", explained member of the provincial government Deputy Governor Anton Steixner at the presentation of the award to the MD of the Tourism Association Kitzbühel Alps - Brixental, Max Salcher. "The Kitzbühel Alps, a Tyrolean tourism magnet since the year one, have thus once again positioned themselves as an innovative pioneer in ecological and sustainable tourism offerings", according to Anton Steixner. The Tyrolean showcase project was also nominated for the Austrian Energy Globe Award and, since its award on Friday, 11/11/2011 in Ried im Innkreis, can count itself as among the top three.
E-mobility and resources protect - experts see great tourism potential
"Protecting the environment, saving resources and appealing to new guests with ecotourism. That is the dictate of the moment, particularly for the tourism region of Tyrol", said Bruno Oberhuber, Managing Director of Energy Tyrol, the competence centre of the county for energy affairs. Electric bicycles could play a pivotal role in this. "The award-winning showcase project definitely shows the potential", says Oberhuber.
According to Max Salcher from the Kitzbüheler Alpen-Brixental Tourist Association, more than 35,000 guests have already made use of this innovative offer this year. In nine Tyrolean tourism regions, 45 localities in total, altogether 300 electric bicycles, 79 rental stations and 62 excursion destinations with battery replacement stations are available to guests. The Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser mountain range have therewith entered the international record books as the largest contiguous E-bike-region in the world.
The world's largest E-bike network: 1,000 kilometres of E-bike roues for multi-day trips
In the 1,800 km2 large region with 90 E-bike routes and a total network of around 1,000 kilometres, you can now also go on longer outings and even multi-day trips with your E-bike. "Our young guests have already been on many outings with the mountain bike in the Tyrolean mountains. The E-bike now provides an environmentally friendly two-wheel alternative to the car for those who want to take a more leisurely approach", praises the member of the provincial government. The award-winning project also fits in seamlessly with the new energy programme of the provincial government, which provides answers to the future issue of how to make Tyrol energy self-sufficient one generation. This programme specifically provides for ten focus points (including mobility) and will be presented in a few days by member of the provincial government Anton Steixner.
The jury also particularly emphasised that the tourism businesses in the region, too, had actively participated in the Kitzbühel E-Bike-Summer. In Kitzbühel alone, 15 partners joined the E-Bike project: Seven hotels and three sports shops rent out E-bikes to locals and visitors, five excursion destinations serve as battery replacement stations. The cyclists can thus target more than 80 destinations with the E-bike in the wider Kitzbühel Alps area. Other partners include the German company "MOVELO", the world's largest supplier of electromobility for the tourism industry, and TIWAG. "As a partner of the E-bike region Kitzbühel Alps & Kaiser Mountains, TIWAG puts great emphasis on the issue of E-mobility. The Kitzbühel region, with its dense network of bike paths and state-of-the-art, technical infrastructure for electromobile locomotion is a pioneer in this area, too. This makes the Kitzbühel E-bike world unique. For the future we are planning to source the current for running the bikes to 100 percent from CO2-free Tyrolean hydro power supplied by ÖkoEnergie Tirol GmbH. We are proud to be part of this project", explained Mag.(FH) Elmar Schneitter (TIWAG-E-mobility expert).
Here at the Stanglwirt, too, we provide the opportunity to exclusively rent E-bikes in our shop and to be out exploring the picturesque surroundings of the Wilder Kaiser in no time.
